Fortunately the fix is simple, so if you have experienced a drop in device longevity after the 5.1.1 update try the solution below.
Before proceeding you should perform a quick manual back up through iCloud or iTunes just in case something goes wrong. This process resets all iOS device settings, meaning you will have to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords, auto-fill info, Apple ID, etc.

1. Open “Settings” and tap on “General” then “Reset”, tap on “Reset All Settings”
2. Enter the passcode if you have one set, then tap “Reset” to confirm the settings adjustment
3. Reboot the device and set it up as new, reentering personalization data as necessary

Battery life should be immediately improved, though a comment left on Apple Discussion Boards suggests letting the iPhone/iPad/iPod touch drain down to 0% and then recharging for an hour or so past 100% before disconnecting from a power source is a good follow-up.

iPhone Home Button Not Working or Unresponsive? Try This Fix

From time to time, the iPhone Home button can become less responsive to clicks, and pressing the button will either result in a delay, lag, or sometimes complete unresponsiveness requiring multiple clicks. While this could be symptomatic of a hardware issue caused by moisture damage or dropping the phone, sometimes you can fix the response problem with the following sequence:

• Open a default iOS application, such as Stocks, Calculator, or Weather
• Press and hold down the Power button until the “Slide to Power Off” dialog appears, then release

Why this works to fix the buttons responsiveness isn’t entirely clear, because the procedure actually just force quits the application you launched in the first step. FaceTime has long been expected to support video calls over 3G networks, but thus far it hasn’t happened without a jailbreak. Blame it on the carriers, Apple, the rain, maybe 3G is too slow, or maybe it will be a feature for upcoming 4G LTE iPad and iPhone hardware… who knows, but regardless you can use a little loophole to initiate FaceTime video chat over 3G connections without the need for jailbreaking.

• Enable Personal Hotspot on an iPhone
• Connect to that Wi-Fi hotspot with another FaceTime capable iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad

Suddenly you can make video calls over 3G.

 Not the best solution because it requires additional hardware, but apparently it works.
